Rex Hoyle and Jerry Isaacs led a massive 30-car field onto the hallowed grounds of Daytona International Speedway for the Season 2 Round 01 of the YesterYear Tour Modified Series. Isaacs stormed off the line with a fantastic start, darting ahead, only to be quickly caught by a tightly packed field – bumper to bumper, these modifieds were ready for battle! A near disaster loomed on turns three and four as a car grazed the yellow line, but the driver skillfully maintained control, keeping the race alive and electrifying. As the race unfolded on Lap 3, it became clear that the frontrunners were settling into a furious two-by-two formation, drafting and outpacing the competition. But chaos reignited on Lap 5 when a car careened through the grass without a caution flag flying, keeping the momentum going! By Lap 6, the top six cars formed a single-file line, extending their lead to about a second ahead of the rest, while Lap 7 saw the first caution of the night triggered when a car slammed into the wall. The pit stops under caution due to fuel concerns on Lap 11 shook things up as Isaacs and Dale Copeland emerged to lead the pack. Over the next laps, three distinct racing packs formed, with the top six cars seeking glory at the front and a lone tandem battle forming behind.
Fast forward to Lap 36, and a new leader emerged – Mark Fisch, with Jonathan Theer providing a mighty push from behind! The intensity cranked up again with green flag pit stops on Lap 41 as the tension hung in the air. On Lap 42, Copeland seized the lead, but a twist as he pitted on Lap 43 saw the lead pass to Ken Allen. The drama intensified on Lap 47 when Isaacs surged back into the top spot, making a daring outside move from third! Lap 53 saw Gavin Adams nipping at Isaacs’ heels, seizing the lead in a spectacular twist of fortune. As we entered the later stages, lead changes became common, with Isaacs and Allen exchanging blows as they tore through the track. By Lap 58, Isaacs and Allen crafted a two-car pack, looking unstoppable as they approached the finale. Then it came down to the wire! The excitement surged on Lap 70 with pit stops once again shaking up the leaderboard. Isaacs, with a solid four-second lead, rejoined the action, but Fisch and Adams weren’t backing down, making a fierce comeback. Fisch took command on Lap 81, leaving everyone on the edge of their seats! As the final lap approached, Isaacs and Allen built an impressive eight-second cushion over Adams and Liston, but Liston had different plans. Lap 98 saw him make a critical move, passing Adams for third. With the tension building, lapped traffic disrupted Allen’s momentum, and in a heart-pounding moment, Isaacs, 0.3 seconds behind, battled the lap cars only to brush against the apron, losing crucial speed. In a breathtaking finish, Allen capitalized on the situation, catching Isaacs as they charged towards the checkered flag. With a burst of speed, he snatched the victory right from Isaacs’ grasp! Todd Liston rounded out the amazing podium performance, finishing third after starting way back in 21st!
