Smith valiantly defended his lead against relentless challenges from Bruce Pearson and Donny Moore, creating a three-driver breakaway at the race’s outset.
Meanwhile, Young navigated through the field, strategically preserving his equipment, making a steady climb up to 5th place within the initial 30 laps. Pearson persistently pressured Smith but couldn’t make a move stick. Young, overtaking Todd Liston for 4th, closed the gap to the leading trio.
As Young closed in, Moore and Pearson, sensing his presence, intensified their maneuvers but were unable to unsettle Smith. Young executed an audacious outside pass on Moore, setting his sights on Pearson. Liston quietly crept back into contention, setting the stage for a five-car battle at the front.
On lap 63, Pearson’s slight error allowed Young to pounce, claiming 2nd place with a daring low pass.
