Williamson Weathers the Storm: Championship Gap Closes After Southern National Marathon
Lucama, NC — The Round 14 showdown of the Red Light Racing Modified Series at Southern National Motorsports Park was a grueling test of patience, strategy, and survival. On a night that saw the points race tightened by catastrophe for the leader, Dalton Williamson emerged victorious in a 150-lap marathon that lived up to the track’s reputation as a high-intensity short track.
The evening began with a surprise during the single-lap qualifying session when Mark Poe secured the pole position. However, the 0.4-mile track proved treacherous almost immediately. On just the second lap, Poe got loose on the bottom of the track, triggering a massive pile-up that collected several contenders. The incident saw Jeff Aho flipped over, while Brian Neff and Fred LeClair sustained heavy wall contact. Amidst the chaos, AJ Hamel managed to sneak through the wreckage to take the early lead.
The race took a dramatic turn during a subsequent caution period when the leader, AJ Hamel, was involved in a bizarre collision with Louis Flowers. The incident effectively ended Hamel’s bid for the win and handed the lead to Dalton Williamson. Meanwhile, points leader Eric Stout endured a nightmare of his own; after qualifying 15th, Stout was involved in two separate incidents that left his car with severe suspension damage. Despite the damage, Stout remained on the track, limping his machine around to salvage every possible point.
As Williamson settled into a dominant rhythm, a tactical divide emerged. Around lap 77, Mark Poe and Fred LeClair elected to pit for fresh tires. Poe utilized the fresh rubber to begin a furious charge, moving into third place by lap 130 despite several close calls. However, as Poe’s tires eventually began to equalize with the leaders’ older sets, the door opened for Luke Logan Allen.
Having started 16th and patiently managed his equipment all night, the driver known as Kid Lemon Lime mounted a fierce challenge on Williamson in the final 15 laps, closing the gap to within half a second. Williamson maintained his discipline despite a car that was bottoming out on the track surface, holding steady through the final corners to claim his second win of the season. Luke Logan Allen finished a career-best second, followed by Mark Poe in third. The top five was rounded out by Kenny Allen and series organizer Joshua Buckley.
The victory was a major boost for Williamson’s championship hopes. With Eric Stout finishing 15th and eight laps down, the points gap has narrowed considerably heading into the final rounds of the season. Williamson noted after the race that while the win was a necessary step in his hunt for a fifth series crown, he took no joy in the bad luck that befell the points leader.
