13th to First: Tony Blake Brewer Hunts Down Hawkins for Chicagoland Triumph

by Ryan Senneker

The ISRA Tuned-Up Truck Series presented by Sim Gaming Expo returned for Round 4 of its campaign with a 125-lap feature event at Chicagoland Speedway, where twenty-two high-horsepower trucks lined up to conquer the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval. As the green flag snapped to life, pole-sitter Matt Taylor and points leader Vern Hawkins charged side-by-side into the sweeping banking of Turns 1 and 2. Taylor leaned hard on the bottom lane, but Hawkins fended off the initial thrust by leaning into high-side momentum, ripping the top line against the wall to clear Taylor exiting Turn 2 and seize the early race lead.

Chicagoland Speedway’s semi-rough asphalt forced drivers to manage a treacherous dual-personality layout where Turns 1 and 2 allowed trucks to roll smooth, uninterrupted momentum through the arc, whereas Turns 3 and 4 tightened up severely on exit, inducing violent wheelspin and side-slip when drivers reapplied throttle. Further complicating the handling setup was a delicate thermal threshold, as tire management was dictated less by tread wear and more by core rubber temperatures spiking past 280 degrees Fahrenheit under heavy load. While Hawkins paced the field up front, holding off intense quarter-panel pressure from Chris Stofer and Ryan O’Donoghue, Tony Blake Brewer was orchestrating a methodical march from the 13th starting spot. Carving through traffic, Brewer conserved his tire temperatures over the long run, steadily picking off spots and positioning himself as a formidable threat to the leaders.

The race’s rhythm was interrupted on Lap 37 by its sole caution period when Sam Crowe got loose exiting Turn 2 and made contact with James Hodgson, setting off a multi-truck stack-up as oncoming traffic scrambled to avoid the rotating machines down the backstretch. As yellow-flag pit strategy ensued, Gabe Butler momentarily inherited the lead by delaying his entry before eventually pitting, while catastrophe struck front-runner Matt Taylor on pit road. Taylor misjudged his braking point, overshot his pit box, and lost critical track position, dropping deep into the top five into dirty air where he was forced to battle back through heavy traffic.

As the feature transitioned into its second half under green, a crucial green-flag pit stop cycle unfolded around Lap 80. Vern Hawkins came in early around Lap 78 to execute an undercut strategy, taking on fresh rubber to briefly defend his track position at the head of the field. Pit entry provided heart-in-mouth drama when Mark Cohn suffered a wild, sideways slide upon deceleration, miraculously gathering up his machine inches from the wall without crashing or drawing a penalty in what the broadcast booth termed a lottery-ticket save. Once the field fully cycled through, Brewer utilized his conserved tire temperatures and superior clean-air pace to rapidly erase Hawkins’ gap, while fierce battles raged further back among Stofer, O’Donoghue, Mark Murphy, and Lewis Hayes.

The decisive pass for the victory transpired on Lap 98, when Brewer mounted a thunderous run down the backstretch and dove under Hawkins into Turn 3, cleanly completing the move to take command of the feature. Simultaneously, Lionel Calisto was putting on a masterclass drive, slicing his way from 18th on the grid all the way up to 4th place to capture Hard Charger honors with fourteen positions gained.

In the closing circuits, Brewer maintained supreme composure out front, managing his gap and holding off a late charge from runner-up Hawkins and a resilient Taylor, who recovered from his pit road setback to finish 3rd. Brewer crossed the finish line to secure his first victory of the ISRA Tuned-Up Truck Series season. With Hawkins expanding his championship lead slightly over Taylor, the series now carries immense narrative momentum into Round 5, where the competitors will trade the high-banked ovals for the legendary right-and-left turns of Watkins Glen International.
