James Tiernan took another win as he seems to be unbeatable in the series, regardless of the car or track, in the Bootleg Racing League National Sprint Car Trail at Kokomo Speedway ahead of Brandyn Proudfoot and Bruce Jones. Tiernan shared with us tonight’s winning strategy, “The top line can be very, very quick here and I knew if I just ran it in a little bit more, got rid of that cushion and made it tricky to run, and then just switch to my preferred line which is the bottom here then I think it’d be smooth sailing from there. Kind of Worked out that way.”
James Tiernan took the pole going into the evening with his 4-lap average time of 12.057 in qualifying, beating out the rest of the field by over 0.2 seconds on the boards. Off the jump, Tiernan jumped out to a strong lead as Brandyn Proudfoot quickly climbed up through the field clearing into 2nd only 5 laps into the run. Stephen Spies chased Proudfoot around the high side staying close enough to keep the pressure up on Proudfoot while Tiernan extended his lead out to 1.5 seconds.
Justin Morton and Aiden Young battled hard over 5th place further back in the field as the caution flag came out on lap 12 from a solo car incident erasing Tiernan’s lead ahead of Proudfoot. Proudfoot stayed close behind Tiernan off the green but wasn’t able to challenge for the lead himself with Stephen Spies close behind. Bruce Jones took advantage of the restart and went into the 2nd half of the night going 3 wide with Spies and Proudfoot over 2nd. As the drivers shuffled, Jones jumped up into 2nd ahead of Proudfoot by running the lowline.
Going into the final 6 laps, Tiernan had completely left the field behind running over 5 seconds ahead of the battle for 2nd between Jones and Proudfoot. Spies followed close behind but was slowly falling off the pace. Coming out of the final corner, James Tiernan took the checkered flag with a 5.6 second lead. Bruce Jones and Brandyn Proudfoot came across the line side by side with Proudfoot claiming 2nd place by 0.006 and Stephen Spies and Justin Morton rounded out the top 5 tonight at Kokomo Speedway.
Aiden Young holds onto the lead in the overall point standings with 509 points. Bruce Jones moved up into 2nd with 482 points as Justin Morton slid back to 3rd with 480 points. Stephen Spies moves up into 4th with 418 points and Rory Collins rounds out the top 5 drivers with 411 points. James Tiernan is the current points leader in the Dirt 360 Sprints with 152 points ahead of Bruce Jones and Brandyn Proudfoot.
