Jake Matheson Surges Late at Richmond as ODonoghue Fades

by Ryan Senneker

Round 3 of Season 1 in the ISRA Tuned-Up Truck Series presented by Sim Gaming Expo landed under the lights at Richmond Raceway for a grueling 150-lap feature across the 3/4-mile short track. Under atmospheric conditions of 69°F ambient temperature and a starting track temperature of 71°F, a 24-truck grid took the green flag for a high-intensity short-track showdown. Central to tonight’s setup was the series’ signature “Tuned-Up” specification package, which pushes engine power outputs up to a boosted 105-to-110 percent horsepower profile. On Richmond’s abrasive, D-shaped oval, this additional under-hood grunt placed immense stress on rear drive units, forcing drivers to tread a fine line between aggressive throttle application and tire preservation. Pole-sitter Ryan O’Donoghue launched cleanly alongside outside front-row starter and defending series champion Matt Taylor, using the inside line to control the initial restart and establish immediate dominance out front. As O’Donoghue set a scorching early pace, the pack behind engaged in furious multi-lane skirmishes for early lane preference, with drivers searching for the optimal balance between high-side momentum and low-groove rotation.

The race’s opening rhythm was abruptly interrupted on Lap 2 when Justin Kirby got loose on corner exit off Turn 2, triggering a violent chain-reaction melee that swept up Gary Leverne, Gabe Butler, and Craig Forsythe. The accordion-effect crash handed terminal front-end damage to short-track contender Michael Goodman, forcing his premature retirement under a black flag. Capitalizing on the early yellow, Lionel Calisto executed a bold tactical pit entry from 20th position to bolt on four fresh Goodyear tires. By surrendering early track position, Calisto created an aggressive tire-life delta over the rest of the field. When green-flag racing resumed on Lap 6, Calisto’s fresh, cold-setting Goodyears provided immediate side-bite and lateral traction advantage. Carving through mid-pack traffic on long green runs while rival trucks struggled on scuffed, heated rubber, Calisto sliced forward to gain 14 positions overall, eventually pushing deep into top-10 and top-6 contention.

O’Donoghue continued his masterclass out front through the mid-race stint, navigating back-marker traffic with precision as the track surface began to rubber in. Near Lap 50, Connor Okrzesik mounted the night’s first serious challenge for the lead; utilizing a high-line momentum run through Turns 1 and 2, Okrzesik executed a daring, late dive-bomb entry into Turn 3, briefly snatching the point before O’Donoghue executed a clean cross-over maneuver on corner exit to regroup. As the green-flag stint lengthened towards the halfway mark, the second caution of the night flew around Lap 75. Series organizer Mike Rigney slapped the outside wall off Turn 4 and checked up, causing a trailing Justin Kirby to make heavy contact as a rebound partner, ending Kirby’s night. Under the yellow, lead-lap pit road traffic was bustling, but Austin Hunt executed a calculated strategic gambit by staying out to lead a lap under caution, securing a valuable bonus point before coming down pit lane late in the yellow cycle to rejoin at the tail of the lead-lap pack.

The final 75-lap green-flag run proved to be a masterclass in sim-racing telemetry and vehicle dynamics as track temperatures climbed to 84°F, causing severe thermal degradation across the field’s right-front Goodyear tires. Pushing his boosted Ford F-150 hard to hold the lead, O’Donoghue adopted the high-side “Larson line,” but as the tire tread wore away, he over-committed on entry without proper trail-braking. Stabbing the brakes rather than floating the chassis center-off scrubbed his right-front tire down to the canvas, sending his truck wide and pounding the Turn 3 and 4 wall on multiple occasions. Conversely, Jake Matheson played the patient long game. Matheson preserved his equipment over 60-plus green-flag laps by wrapping the bottom yellow line, delaying throttle application on corner exit to prevent rear wheelspin, and avoiding excessive steering wheel displacement. Between Laps 115 and 125, as a multi-second gap evaporated, Matheson watched O’Donoghue and Okrzesik get “squirrely” while wrestling their pushed front ends up high. Capitalizing instantly, Matheson diamonded the corner off Turn 2, pounced on the inside groove, and swept past both fading trucks in a decisive two-lap pass. Matheson held off a desperate, late-lap charge from Okrzesik to take a triumphant victory, while Greg Evans crossed the line in third. Vern Hawkins claimed fourth while snatching the fastest lap bonus point with a lightning-quick 21.757-second telemetry mark, and the battered truck of O’Donoghue limped home in fifth.
