Matt Watkins Outlasts Ogle and Essary in 125-Lap Phoenix Grind

by Ryan Senneker

The OBRL YesterYear Cup Series Season 9 Round 33 feature presented a brutal, high-stakes 125-lap test around the 1-mile oval of Phoenix Raceway, as the championship battle reached fever pitch with only three races remaining. Elevated thermal conditions baked the facility, with ambient temperatures reaching 86°F and trackside surface temperatures climbing to a blistering 98.6°F, rapidly degrading tire compounds on the flat racing surface. Complicating drivers’ tactical choices, league officials strictly enforced venue rules regarding Phoenix’s modern configuration, declaring the asphalt below the yellow lines on the dogleg completely off-limits under threat of strict time penalties. Heading into the desert feature, Canadian points leader Dwayne McArthur held a 41-point cushion over Matt Watkins, leaving Watkins, Tom Ogle, and Eric Essary as the only drivers mathematically viable to deny McArthur the crown. Managing 900-horsepower Gen 4 stock cars across 125 non-stop laps created immense psychological tension throughout the paddock, as any mistake on the low-grip surface promised severe championship consequences.

When the green flag dropped, pole-sitter Matt Watkins launched cleanly alongside front-row partner Roger Hurley, asserting immediate dominance off Turn 2 to set a relentless wire-to-wire pace out front. To combat severe tire degradation, Watkins deployed a precise driving technique, backing up his corner entries, riding higher into Turn 1, and cutting down low off Turn 2 to maximize exit momentum without thrashing his right-front compound. Behind him, Tom Ogle settled into second place and mounted a persistent chase, but found himself thwarted by subtle aerodynamic mechanics. As Ogle closed on the leader, the aerodynamic wash off Watkins’ rear spoiler stripped downforce directly from Ogle’s front splitter, inducing a severe push toward the outside wall that killed his momentum down the backstretch. Drivers across the field were forced to tread lightly near the bottom of the track, as dipping even a single wheel onto the flat apron in the high-horsepower machines produced catastrophic wheelspin. Further back in the pack, midfield battles raged as Sean Foltz, Cortney Nelson, and McArthur fought for clean air in early-run traffic.

As the single-stop event reached its midpoint around Lap 65, the planned green-flag pit stop cycle commenced across the field. Greg McDaniel initiated an early pit entry to attempt an undercut strategy, which successfully vaulted him into second position once the field cycled through. Net race leader Matt Watkins locked up his tires upon entering the curved pit road but gathered the car smoothly to retain the virtual lead upon rejoining the circuit. Conversely, championship leader Dwayne McArthur suffered a disastrous 16.43-second pit stop, costing his team vital track position and dropping his #83 Chevrolet into dense traffic. Meanwhile, Tommy Emasie gambled by stretching his opening stint to 74 laps, completely burning through his fuel load in search of a safety caution. The gamble failed when the race remained green, ultimately forcing Emasie into an unscheduled late-race pit visit to repair right-front fender damage after contacting the wall on worn rubber.

Following the pit cycle, Eric Essary mounted a fierce charge through the field. Utilizing a disciplined tire preservation strategy during the first half of the stint, Essary sliced past McDaniel, Foltz, and Hurley to join the fight for the podium. As the simulated afternoon sun began to dip, a subtle track transition occurred: cooling track temperatures increased lateral grip across the asphalt, locking in the preferred racing lines and making late-run overtaking exponentially more difficult. Despite the tightening conditions, Essary engaged Ogle in an intense wheel-to-wheel duel for second place with under 10 laps remaining. Ogle brushed the outside wall with five laps to go, allowing Essary to briefly dive underneath and nose ahead into Turn 3; however, Ogle gathered his momentum on the high line and reclaimed the runner-up spot coming off Turn 4. Out front, Watkins executed flawless lap-traffic management—navigating around Jeff LeMire, Ralph Blair, and Robert Guarisco—to maintain a steady one-second buffer over his pursuers.

Over the final 20 laps, points leader Dwayne McArthur found himself locked in a physical, multi-car battle against Todd Cousins, Dakota Pischke, Andy Thomas, and Allen Wannamaker. Exercising disciplined damage control, McArthur strategically yielded positions to faster charging cars to avoid incident points, ultimately securing a hard-fought 12th-place finish to safeguard his championship quest. Out front, Matt Watkins took the checkered flag to complete a totally caution-free masterclass, capturing his series-leading 9th victory of Season 9 in dominant wire-to-wire fashion. Ogle secured 2nd place while Essary completed the podium in 3rd, ahead of Hurley in 4th and Nelson rounding out the top five.
